Taking on the reigning Premier League champions away from home with 10 men is a daunting prospect but UCC United battled gamely in this match and emerged with credit. Ultimately, set pieces proved the undoing (not for the first time) of the college team. Three of the EMC goals came from corners and a fourth resulted from a penalty kick. With Ronan O'Dubhghaill excelling in defence and Walter Messina playing heroically in the middle of the park, UCC had their moments and should have netted twice in the second half. The first opportunity fell to Seamus Coffey who made a lung-bursting run from full-back into the EMC penalty area but his well struck shot narrowly flew over the bar. The second opportunity came to Eric Moore whose strong header from a corner kick was cleared off the line. Ultimately, this match will stand to the UCC team and it was a good experience for the first division side to take on the best team in the top flight.
