The Farm, 10:45 kick-off

UCC United 0
Island Tavern 2
UCC United's hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals of the CBSL Shield were dashed on Sunday morning by Premier Division side, Island Tavern. With just 13 players making themselves available for the match, UCC's game plan went out of the window after just two minutes when influential centre-half Dave Coleman limped off with a hamstring strain. The subsequent reshuffle unsettled the college side who conceded two poor goals after 20 and 35 minutes respectively. The first came when a headed clearance landed at the feet of an Island Tavern player who finished with an excellent shot from just outside the penalty area. The second goal resulted from poor communication as an inswinging cross from the left wing was not dealt with. UCC had their moments in the opening period and came very close through Fernando Hernando.
The second half was an even contest. UCC had a number of half chances but were guilty of wasting promising set pieces. At the other end, Dave Groeger made some fine stops to keep his team in the hunt. While the final whistle brought the curtain down on UCC's Shield campaign, this was an encouraging performance against a team from a higher division. The defence generally did well, Trevor Darby gave a man-of-the-match display as a holding midfielder and Will Pierce worked his socks off up front.
Groeger, Moore, Coleman (Hernando), Coffey, Darby, Alvarez, Walmsley, Hegarty, Kinsley, Power, Pierce (Moretz)
