In an absorbing match where a draw would have been a fair outcome, UCC United went down by the narrowest of margins. They made a bright start, scoring early on after Joel Walmsley did well to convert a spilled ball resulting from an excellent shot on the turn by Noel Browne.
A few more chances came UCC’s way, but they were unable to extend their lead, and it was to cost them dearly as Kilcully equalised right on half-time. Stemming from a seemingly innocent-looking move, a miscued cross from the right spun wickedly over Romain Gosselin’s despairing dive.
In the second half, the limited number of substitutes available to UCC began to tell, and they found it difficult to carve out decent chances. The breakthrough for Kilcully came halfway through the second half, as a simple ball over the top led to a chase between the Kilcully striker and the UCC goalkeeper. Both men were equal to the chase, but the striker was the first to react to the breaking ball and slotted it into an empty net.
Not disheartened, UCC increased the pressure on the Kilcully goal and were almost rewarded when Noel Browne’s header from a corner was flicked onto the crossbar by the Kilcully ‘keeper.
Although UCC came away with ‘nul points’ it was a much improved performance by UCC United, as they combined a battling spirit with effective football. In a very good team display, it would be unfair to single out individuals, but the performances of Marcel de Kruijf and Gavin Kinsley on the left flank are worthy of mention, as are that of the two strikers, Noel Browne and Joel Walmsley.
If UCC can build on this performance, the only way is up.
I know you’re all fans of Yazz.
