UCC United v Marriott
Saturday 17 April 2010
The Farm, 2:30 kick-off
UCC United 2 [Power, Moore]
Marriott 1
For the first time this season, UCC United claimed three consecutive league wins with victory over Marriott at the Farm on Saturday afternoon. However it was not the first time that the college outfit has struggled after establishing a two-goal lead. This lead was provided by the side's most regular scorers of late, Aidan Power and Eric Moore. Power struck after 25 minutes with an audacious dipping volley from near the right touch-line which looped over the opposing goalkeeper. Moore struck twelve minutes later when he took advantage of slack defending to calmly poke the ball past the 'keeper. UCC were grateful to Walter Messina for pulling off a great save on the stroke of half-time.
The second half was a more even contest although chances were hard to come by with shots from distance being the order of the day. The game did not liven up until the 80th minute when Messina - now playing in midfield - hit a close range shot which drew a brilliant save for the visiting netminder. Marriott were given hope with five minutes remaining when an inswinging cross from the left wing deceived everybody and entered the net without a touch. Marriott had a late chance from a free-kick which went over the bar.
UCC United are now sixth in the league table on 21 points with two games remaining.
Messina, Hegarty (Brett), Quinlivan (c), Coleman, Lejon, Pierce (Groeger), Darby, Power, Kinsley, Moore, Alvarez (Jordan)
