UCC GAIN VALUABLE WIN AFTER ROLLERCOASTER GAME

CBSL Division 1
UCC United v RCI
at The Farm, Sunday 31 January 2010

UCC United 3 (Power 2, Darby)
RCI 2

UCC United returned to winning ways on Sunday morning by getting the better of RCI by the odd goal in five. UCC led 3-0 after half an hour and looked set for a comprehensive victory but RCI staged a determined second half comeback to make it tense for the college outfit.
UCC took a deserved lead on 12 minutes when Aidan Power's free-kick from the left edge of the penalty area flew into the net. The free had been awarded for a foul on Gavin Kinsley, who tormented the RCI defence in the opening period. On 25 minutes, Power struck again - this time with a shot from outside the area which deceived the goalkeeper at his near post. The highlight of the game came soon after when Trevor Darby's 30-yard half-volley arrowed into the top corner of the net. College were now buoyant and would have extended their lead but for over-elaboration. Pablo Alvarez in particular missed a great chance to get on the score sheet.
The second half started slowly but on the hour mark RCI got back into the game in controversial circumstances. Looking well offside RCI's striker advanced on goal only to be brought down outside the penalty area by Dave Greoger. Greoger received a yellow card and while the referee was counting the steps for UCC's defensive wall the ball was passed to the net by an RCI player. The goal was allowed to stand and RCI received a massive boost. UCC struggled to control the game thereafter and conceded again with fifteen minutes remaining following a fast break-away goal down the right flank. College survived a few scary moments towards the end of the game but ultimately just did enough to claim the three points after a patchy performance.
Kevin Hegarty had a strong game on his return to the team and Trevor Darby was UCC's most consistent player over the 90 minutes.
Greoger, Hegarty, Quinlivan (c), Coleman, Coffey, Lejon (Devaney), Darby, Power, Kinsley, Walmsley (Moore), Alvarez (Pierce) - Barrett
