UCC United v The Groves
The Farm, Saturday 16 January 2010
UCC United 0
The Groves 4
UCC United's long unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on Saturday when they fell to a comprehensive defeat at the hands of the impressive league leaders, The Groves. UCC's absence of football over the past four weeks was apparent during the opening period as the team lacked sharpness and passing was poor. The Groves ruthlessly took full advantage and went in at half-time three goals to the good.
College upped their performance greatly in the second period and the majority of the game was played in their opponent's half of the pitch. However, UCC failed to create clear-cut chances and they fell to a sucker-punch with 10 minutes remaining when a long clearance led to a breakaway goal.
UCC can take pride in the second half effort and there were positive cameo appearances from Brendan Keohane and Liam Weeks who were introduced as second half substitutes. After six league games, UCC are in fourth place having won two, drawn two and lost two. This represents a significant improvement in fortunes from last season.
Greoger, Brett (Weeks), Quinlivan (c), Coleman, Coffey, Pierce (Keohane), Darby, Power, Kinsley, Moore (Walmsley), Alvarez - Lejon
