The Farm, Saturday 14 November 2009, 2:30 pm kick-off
UCC United 1 (Moore)
Marriott FC 1
UCC United welcomed newcomers Marriott FC to the Farm on Saturday afternoon. The match was played in perfect conditions which was surprising given the torrential rain during the week. UCC came into the game in good form but they allowed Marriott to dictate proceedings early on with some slick passing out of defence and through midfield. Dave Groeger had to make some sharp stops in this opening period to maintain parity. UCC also carved out two opportunities of their one; first when Walter Messina's close-range effort was deflected wide and secondly when Dave Burke dragged his shot wide after being put through by a delicious John Devaney pass. The game was very open and it was not a surprise when the visitors struck after 25 minutes following some slack defending by college.
UCC were unable to carve out an equaliser before the break but dominated the second half. Marriott defended bravely but should have been punished just after the hour mark when Gavin Kinsley shot over the bar from eight yards. In the last quarter, UCC committed more men to the attack and this paid off with ten minutes remaining when Eric Moore hit a thunderous drive to the roof of the net. College pressed hard for the winner and came close through Hernando and Devaney but Marriott held out for a deserved point.
Groeger, Brett (Moore), Quinlivan, Walmsley (c), Hegarty (Coffey), Burke (Fernando), Darby, Devaney, Kinsley, Messina, Alvarez
