UCC United demonstrated the battling spirit they will need to succeed this season when coming back from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Silversprings at the Farm last Saturday.
The ring-rustiness was obvious in the opening 20 minutes of the game as Silversprings had the lions share of chances. UCC United took time to get their bearings but found themselves a goal down after 17 minutes. It sparked the college side into life. The equaliser was a well worked move as Dave O'Sullivan played a perfectly weighted ball through to Gavin Kinsley. Kinsley out-ran the Springs defenders and kept his cool to slot it home.
It stayed 1-1 to the break and there was very little to separate the sides in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Silversprings fashioned two goals in the space of 5 minutes midway through the half. The difficulties of last season looked to be emerging again - as UCC found themselves trailing when it was scarcely deserved.
College continued to play impressive football and Dave O'Sullivan, who was putting in an impressive man-of-the-match performance in the middle, put Noel Browne through. The striker still had a lot to do to make space and crash a thunderous shot into the roof of the net. Browne was instrumental in the equaliser when his shot across the face of goal was tapped in by an alert Joel Walmsley.
Manager Deckie Jordan was more than happy with this first outing. "The players showed a lot of character in continuing to play good football even at two goals down" he said. "There was a lot of positives and some of the new players did really well. With several players missing because of holidays and injuries there are going to be some welcome selection headaches this year."
UCC United: Groeger; O'Brien, Moore, McAlester, Gibbs; Kiely, Pierce, Walmsley, Kinsley; O'Sullivan, Burke. Subs: Browne, Scarpa, Nwokonye.
