After the opening day victory, this time UCC United found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline against a well-drilled Silversprings side.
The College side never really built on a promising start and were left to rue mistakes that were to cost them a result.
The game started brightly with both sides having good opportunities to open the scoring. It was Noel Browne who got the opener for UCC United who hit a shot on the turn that sailed over the Silversprings keeper into the top corner. UCC United had been living dangerously but the goal had a galvanising effect and they piled pressure on the Silversprings defence. Alan Gibbs rattled the woodwork after being played through with a delicate pass from Marcas McCionnaigh and from the follow-up Browne 's header was pushed wide by the keepers fingertips. United had the Silversprings defence under growing pressure as the half time break approached. They had six corners in succession, but it was from the last of these corners that Silversprings managed to fashion an unlikely equaliser. The ball broke to the nippy Silversprings striker who managed to outrun the entire UCC defence to slot the ball beyond Romain Gosselin in the College goal. It was a sucker punch but the half time whistle less than two minutes later should have allowed United to regroup.
However, things went from bad to worse for United as they gave up two soft goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Failure to make challenges put the United defence on the back foot and the Silversprings attack was clinical in punishing the lackadaisical United challenges.
The third goal seemed to spark United to life again as they went chasing the game. They got their reward 15 minutes from time when substitute Liam Weeks chased down a ball that seemed lost and managed to beat the defender and goalkeeper to touch it home. United owned the ball for the remainder of the match but couldn't manage to break down the Silversprings defence to secure an equaliser. It was a harsh lesson for United who now realise they will need to compete and hustle for 90 minutes in every game in this division to realise their ambitions of promotion.
