Supervalu began their league campaign with a convincing win over UCC United at the Farm.
The game started very brightly for UCC United, but it was Surpervalu that hit the front with a goal on the break. The ball was allowed to bounce in teh box by a static UCC defence and Supervalu drew full punishment. The college side found themselves three down after a wild five minute spell on the half-hour. It was a sickening blow for UCC United who were denied a lifeline when Joe Tobin was put through by Noel Browne but saw his effort hit the upright.
UCC had to chase the game in teh second half but the game was put beyond doubt by a fine goal for Supervalu when a shot was hit from teh edge of the box following a corner. Supervalu made it five with 15 minutes to go when UCC United were once again hit on teh break as they tried to salvage something from the game.
The action did not end there as Supervalu found themselves reduced to 9 men. The first player was sent off for a second cautionable offence when he showed dissent. He was followed immediately by another Supervalu player who was too vocal in expressing his disagreement with the referee's decision.
The College side pulled a goal back through a fine finish by Browne but a second wasn't possible.
Gordon McAlester was man of the match for UCC United and fought hard in the centre midfield role throughout the game.
UCC United: Gosselin; A. Coomey, D.Kiely, R. O'Dubhghaill, M. Copley; A. Gibbs, N. Browne, G. McAlester, J.Tobin (M. Rae); M de Kruijf (M. Liang) D. Soden (L. Weeks)
